History of
the Organization
The Greater
Kansas City Foundation for Citizens with Disabilities was established over 55
years ago for the purpose of serving children with mental disabilities. The organization has a rich history in
providing a variety of services throughout the years. The Foundation is a private not-for-profit
organization which depends on local support and public funds to continue its
services. Throughout the years, it
should be noted, that the variety of services has changed according to the
needs of the community. In the past, the
Foundation has provided educational programs for children, vocational services
and training for young adults, work activities and sheltered workshops for
adults, Day Habilitation services for children and adults, as well as
residential services for persons with disabilities.
The scope
and needs of the services have changed and are dictated by the funding
available at the time. At the present,
the Foundation provides supports to adults with disabilities in residential
programs, meeting their needs in daily living, as well as supporting them in
becoming members of their community.
